Interview with the Artist – [gameboy]

Gameboy_Amy Zhang_Metro Arts 2024

[gameboy] is a dynamic dance theatre work created by movement artist Amy Zhang.

Inspired by Japanese game shows, video games, and internet culture, [gameboy] fuses street styles with contemporary dance. Amy describes the show as chaotic, sculptural, and playful, promising audiences an epic journey with dancers navigating a video game world.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE SHOW…

Amy Zhang (AZ): Chaotic. Sculptural. Playful.

WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT?

AZ: We made this work by playing a bunch of video games together. It became apparent to me that we share a lot about ourselves when we’re in the comfort of our own homes behind the characters we’ve created. I wanted to find out more about that. The work is about the choices we make in life. Is there ever really a “right” decision

Two epic dancers who are dropped into a video game fighting for their lives…literally.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A PERFORMER/CREATIVE?

AZ: Experimental and off-centre with a dash of humour.

WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

AZ: My friends! I’m blessed to be surrounded by some of my favourite creators in the world and seeing them do big things inspires me to do the same.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR LOVE FOR PERFORMING ARTS?

AZ: Growing up watching Hannah Montana with my best friend is definitely a core memory of mine. We’d film ourselves on our laptops singing all the songs and doing all the dances. That sparked something in me.

[gameboy] is as part of Metro Arts’ DANCE24 festival 29 – 1 June, at New Benner Theatre, West Village, West End.
