Interview with the Artist – Sammie D

Sammie Williams, aka Sammie D, is well known in the dance community as a choreographer, performer, educator, and movement director. As part of DANCE24, Sammie is hosting the Dance and Business in Practice panel discussion featuring fellow artists who’ve forged their paths as independent makers and owners of creative collectives.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A PERFORMER/CREATIVE?

Sammie Williams (SW): I’m a versatile artist who performs and choreographs across the contemporary and hip-hop genres in both the commercial and theatre realms with a curiosity for what lies between and a passion for education at the core of my practice.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION AND WHY?

SW: Keone & Mari Madrid, their choreography is incredible, they move through the commercial and theatrical worlds with so much innovation and integrity. All the street dancers continue to grow our dance community alongside all the day-to-day challenges of life. Every time I go to a battle or jam I’m amazed at the talent in Meanjin.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR AS PART OF DANCE24?

SW: I’m excited that Dance24 is for the whole dance community not just a singular genre, I can’t wait to see everyone sharing in the joy and curiosity of movement.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR LOVE FOR DANCE?

SW: Rage!

DANCE AND BUSINESS IN PRACTICE is presented as part of DANCE24, an experimental dance festival from 22 MAY – 1 JUNE 2024.
