METRO ARTS ARTISTIC PROGRAM 2010

Metro Arts’ annual Artistic Program is dedicated to artists and the development of their practice. Artists demonstrating commitment, skills, experience and a clear objective for the project are selected to professionally present new works through the Independents Program (performing arts) and the Galleries Program (visual arts).

The programs offer artists the opportunity to strive for sustainability by building their skills and personal profile and developing work to take to other venues, nationally and internationally. In 2010, we are especially focused on diversifying the art form practices we support, including multi art and hybrid art projects in both the visual and performing arts. Artists are selected by a group of experienced multi art form advisors who all support independent work.

Luisa Rossitto ImageMetro Arts' artistic policy is guided by open platform programming. The organisation invests in its artists and their ability to realise the defined objectives of the project, leaving creative control solely in their hands. Metro Arts’ open platform selection process is guided by 30 years of organisational experience in supporting the independent artist sector.

The Independents Program won a Matilda Award in 2002, its inaugural year, for "promoting local artists and producing consistently good work". In 2010,  the Independents will continue to provide early-career and established independent artists with opportunities to develop, experiment and challenge themselves, their practice and their audiences in the intimate 98-seat Sue Benner Theatre at Metro Arts.

David Thomas ImageThe Galleries Program has been providing opportunities for early- and mid-career independent artists since 2002 exhibiting painting, sculpture, installation, moving image, digital, sound, illustration and photography. In 2010, Metro Arts will encourage artists to consider new collaboration and new forms or work.

The Artistic Program also supports an Artist in Residence, the NBC Capital-Metro Arts Scholarship, and introduced in 2008, the Artist Run Initiative Program, and the Company in Residence Program.

In June 2010, Metro Arts presented FreeRange, a professional and rigorous platform for artists to test, develop, workshop and cultivate new works for the stage, and to engage with industry leaders.

Metro Arts provides Artistic Program artists with mentoring, publicity, marketing, project planning and technical support.
