The Sui Ensemble are driven to understand the history of the Queer Battlefront, using performance to develop traditions for remembrance, an appreciation for the present and a ferocity for the future.
To do this, they will be attempting to stage an anthology of crucial moments throughout queer history, focusing specifically on moments of battle. Throughout this process, they will engage and implement an arsenal of immersive and gamified performance structures. Most importantly, they will be making frequent and meaningful contact with the Queer Community to effectively understand and represent battles of the past, present and future.
The work’s final collaborator is its audience; an essential agent in completing our understanding of modern queer culture and it’s approaches to adversity. The trials of the past are held in the minds of those in the present; as such STONEWALL requires an audience who is present and active in the performance world. We feel that the presence of the audience is crucial in iterating that history is both written and in-the-writing.
The Sui Ensemble wish to acknowledge that today’s progress is owed to yesterday’s sacrifice and bravery. It tells us that perhaps those who repeat history are not always doomed.
