EXHIBITION / 21 – 24 May 2014
METRO ARTS BASEMENT
Going by tabloid exposés alone, over the last year the public’s interest in drones – military, commercial and police Unmanned Aerial Vehicles – has peaked. While alarmists fear new developments in law enforcement and surveillance, optimists look forward to a spectacular convenience (internet shopping delivered from the sky!). Potential crossover applications will be impressive too! But as consumers, how can we connect meaningfully with the automata in our skies and enter a new system of command, control, and reward?
Advocates for such advancement Golden Solution (Michael Candy, Kiah Reading, Andrew McLellan) aim to discuss with fellow civilians how to become active agents in an exciting new terrain. Following theirAltertruism series for Melbourne’s Next Wave Festival, the group will host an evening roundtable discussion with guest lectures by peers, scholars and the public on the narrowing gap between speculative fiction and fact. A contemplative symposium warped by speakers, lighting, and drink, the open-bill event posits all attending to be involved as we reassess our freedoms, fears and desires in the face of such new technology.
