A performance of Splendour by Abi Morgan.
While civil war rages outside, four women hole-up in an opulent drawing room, waiting for a dictator to return home.
Splendour is an intricate and complex piece of storytelling by British playwright Abi Morgan (best-known in Australia for her screenplays for Suffragette and Iron Lady).
Boldly experimental, the structure of Morgan’s play mirrors the disintegration of order occurring outside. Changing iterations of the same scene offer new perspectives of events before allowing the audience to finally piece the truth together. Dialogue is further refracted, with the audience privy to switching languages as well as unvoiced thoughts.
The play explores the privilege, fear and brutality through which political power is wielded, that it does so through the experiences of four women – victims, collaborators and witnesses – makes it both revelatory and breathtakingly original.
Proudly showcasing the talents of female theatre artists, Now Look Here have assembled an all-female cast, creative team and crew for this production.
“Abi Morgan… takes an all-female four-hander and turns it into an unnerving interrogation of totalitarian government…
it’s the kind of theatre that gnaws at the mind long afterwards.”
