Shivanjani Lal is an emerging visual artist, who is culturally Indian, born in Fiji and grew up in Auburn and Lidcombe in Western Sydney, where she is currently based. Her practice is a thematic examination of identity and home, which questions where diaspora peoples fit in society and culture. Her multidisciplinary practice uses storytelling, documentary and sculpture to create installation and video based artworks. Her aim is to generate an active and empathetic response from her audience towards the quiet and untold stories of the “other”. She was the recipient of an ArtPlay EOI Creative Lab where she developed a project for migrant families in the 2014-2015 season. In late 2015 she will be curating a series of exhibitions for Gaffa Gallery, exploring the relationship artists of multiple cultures have to place.
