A recent graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts (Animateuring), Sally Lewry is a Melbourne-based performance artist and theatre maker who creates evocative, original performance work. Hailing from Western Sydney her work engages with a deep sense of socio-political content, often driven by personal politic and the human condition. Sally’s practice is led by clear investigation within an intuitive process, valuing highly skilled craft with which she endeavors to reveal. Sally engages in a variety of forms including strong physical movement, improvisation, imagery, language, video, design, light and sound, in both solo and collaborative contexts. Sally also works as a Director and Educator in a variety of contexts, informing and contributing to her practice. Sally is interested in developing an articulate body of work through research and practice, alongside shared dialogue with a community of artists in order to facilitate a rigorous and pertinent practice.
Sally completed her undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Performance: Theatremaking at the University of Western Sydney, Theatre Nepean. She has trained and worked with a variety of companies in Sydney including Urban Theatre Projects, where she was selected to be a part of the Urban Theatre Projects Emerging Artist Ensemble. Sally also worked with PACT Centre for Emerging Artists who presented her solo work Back of Bourke, touring to The Big West Festival, Melbourne and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. In 2010 Sally made the move to Melbourne to return to study and further her practice attending the Animateur course at VCA. In 2011 she performed in Arts House Hot August Night with a short work and with Italian Company Dewey Dell, in Next Wave Festival 2012 with the work Grave as part of The Exchange Program 2 at Arts House. Sally is a part of the Women In A Room creative alliance working on The Shape of Things project, Northcote Town Hall, 2013. Sally is also a recent recipient of the Australia Council for the Arts, Artstart program (2012).
