Nathan Stoneham is a theatre artist and musician who often works in community and cultural development settings. Since graduating from QUT in 2008, he has worked across the Asia-Pacific region in a variety of roles. In Korea, he performed in and directed a community outreach children’s show and presented original works at various galleries and festivals, including the Korean International Performance Art Festival. As an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development, Nathan spent a year in Tonga as a drama trainer, assisting a local performance troupe to educate communities about sexual health and human rights. He co-created Imaginary Theatre’s LOOK and has performed in it at the Brisbane Powerhouse, ASITIEJ Korea Festival and the Aha Children’s Festival in India. With Contact Inc, Nathan has facilitated The Walking Neighbourhood in Brisbane, Darwin and Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Nathan is interested in creating social containers to present intersectional stories, often exploring transcultural and queer ideas. An example is 지하 Underground – a queer, bilingual piece of music theatre set in a Korean speakeasy that premiered at Metro Arts a part of the Season of the Independents,2011, enjoyed a season in the 2012 Brisbane Festival, and as part of Brisbane Powerhouse’s WTF2014. This interest in social practice saw Nathan engage in a residency with Mammalian Diving Reflex in Canada, studying social acupuncture alongside Darren O’Donnell. Inspired by his dear friend and mentor, the late Roger Rynd, Nathan is committed to exploring ways art can be applied to foster friendships across perceived borders.
