Christopher Cipollone is a Brisbane based artist whose practice explores themes of commercialism and commodification. Using ready made materials or products sourced directly from the landscape of consumerism, he re-brands or re-purposes them to alter their original function. The major concerns driving his practice are how the essence of ‘nature’, or the natural world, is extracted, or heightened, to achieve comforting, sublime, attractive, seductive discourses and how our own personal politics are woven into these generated messages and branding.
Cipollone is interested in the ‘taxonomy of needs’ that presents itself with materiality and human lifestyle and culture, and how this is tracked from childhood to adulthood. His work often employs humour to undermine the seriousness of the ‘high-end’ of the art world.
